Taiji - A Way of Healthy Living

Taiji for Stress
Stress is the primary problem responsible for two-thirds of all office visits to doctors in the United States. It costs the American economy "as high as $150 billion a year - almost the size of the federal deficit" as a Newsweek cover story state. To reduce stress and gain optimum health, the American Institute for Preventive Medicine recommends relaxation exercise. Taiji is exactly that kind of exercise. Taiji (T'ai Chi) is a blend of martial arts, physical and mental therapy, and relaxation exercise. Taiji not only incorporates martial arts, but psychology and medicine as well. The natural, continuous and circular movements and postures of Taiji are to strengthen the muscles and joints and improve neuromuscular and skeletal functions. The total concentration required minimizes distracting thoughts and controls emotions, achieving calmness of mind. The guided imagery and visualization redirect biochemical secretions in your body which can be a source of healing and recovery from illness. Taiji has been described by many as "a graceful swimming dance on land" or "moving meditation".

Stress can be the cause of the two major killers - heart disease and cancer - according to the American Institute for Preventive Medicine. Taiji promotes the relaxation response which can be a healing source benefiting the heart and enhancing the immune system as many scientific studies have shown. Studies have also shown that Taiji benefits people with arthritis. The practice of Taiji improves flexibility, increases the range of joint motion, improves motor skills - such as balance and coordination - and enhances mental agility, especially in older people.

Taiji for Living
Taiji is a lifestyle which promotes total well-being. As the principle of Tao states, "the natural law of life should be sensitively and intelligently followed, no resisted." To promote longevity and optimum health, man must live according to the laws of nature and the principle of Yin/Yang - the dynamic and constant balance.
